Charmed drama

Charmed is a classic American fantasy drama featuring three sisters with supernatural powers. With Brad Kern as the showrunner, the series won the love and attention of millions across the globe. Here are four reasons Charmed was a blockbuster.

1. Cult Following Status

Charmed is among the few series that has attained a cult following, with its debut episode getting 7.7 million viewers, a historical record for WB Television Network. The first three seasons aired on Wednesday/Thursday at 9 pm, where they seconded 7th Heaven as WB’s highest-rated series. Later, the show was moved to Sunday at 8 pm, making history as WB’s highest-rated Sunday night program. From 2006 to 2012, this blockbuster was the longest-running television series with female leads.

2. Relatability

One of the things that made Charmed stand out was its focus on family rather than the supernatural. It had an excellent blend of fantasy and real life to create an intriguing but relatable show. The series features three sisters who were witches, not three witches who were sisters. It showed sisterly love with Prue, Piper, and Phoebe having each other’s backs.

While the sisters had different personalities, they found a way to reconcile their differences. The characters were relatable for most people, with Prue depicting elder siblings wanting to protect and support their siblings. Phoebe represents younger siblings with their wayward and unfocused mentality.

3. Female-Centric Show

In a primarily male-dominated industry, Charmed was a game changer and advanced gal power. While some films like Dark Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer had started including actresses in their cast, Changed opted for an all-female lead. It proved that the age of women on TV has come and women-led shows can be as successful as male ones. From 2006 to 2012, Charmed was the longest-running all-female-led show until Desperate Housewives outdid it.

4. Numerous Awards

Like many blockbusters, Charmed has received many nominations and awards. It ranked among the ‘Top 20 Magic/Supernatural Shows of All Time’ in 2010 and ‘The 60 Greatest Sci-Fi Shows of All Time’ in 2013. In 2012, the NPD Group revealed that Charmed came second as the most-watched television series on subscription services like Netflix.

The series got nominations for prominent awards, including Teen Choice AWARDS, TV Guild, Wand, and Saturn Awards. Charms’ actors have also received nominations and awards in and out of the US. Holly Marie Combs Ryan as Piper Halliwell won the Best Science Fiction Lead Actress in the RATTY Awards in 2003.

Similarly, Alyssa Milano as Phoebi Halliwell was nominated for Favorite Female TV Character in the Spacey Award in 2004 and Favorite Television Actress at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in 2005. Over the years, Charmed has inspired numerous films in the Sci-Fi genre, novels, games, and soundtracks. Another famous American Actress, Sepideh Moafi, from the CBS series Blue Blood can be noted for her outstanding performance.

Charmed was an epic show depicting female solidarity, fantasy, and captivating love twists. It features a trio of likable stars, is highly relatable, and has garnered numerous awards and nominations. One of the best lessons from the show was believing in magic. Not just magic relating to supernatural ability but one found in people, nature, and talent.
